2015 NLC Miami in the Community

From March to May 2015, through its "NLC Miami in the Community" initiative, NLC Miami will be shining a light on various Miami organizations, non-profits, and foundations that serve the Miami community and present opportunities for Miamians to get more involved. Below are the NLC'ers and organizations that have been recognized thus far.   




Featuring: Ron Bilbao, 2012 NLC Miami Fellow


Organization: SAVE (Safeguarding American Values for Everyone)

Mission: SAVE’s mission is to promote, protect and defend equality for people in South Florida who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.

Role: Board Member, Chair of Endorsements Committee, Young Guardian

Why: "I believe in the mission and vision of SAVE as both a community advocacy organization and a contributor to the broader movement towards equality and equal rights for all. Organizations like SAVE propel our collective progressive goals by making society fairer and more just not just for the LGBT community, but for everyone."

Featuring: Dotie Joseph, 2014 NLC Miami Fellow

Organization: Haitian Lawyers Association

Mission: To promote excellence, professionalism, equality and diversity in the legal profession and among our members and to facilitate the administration of justice while striving to protect and promote the general welfare of the Haitian-American community and other minority residents in the South Florida area.

Role: President (previously served as President-Elect and Director) 

Why: "I chose to serve HLA because I:
(1) believe in the organization's mission to "promote excellence, professionalism, equality and diversity in the legal profession," 
(2) am committed to doing my part to voice the concerns and celebrate the accomplishments of the Haitian-American community; and
(3) am passionate about ensuring that ALL communities can enjoy the fair administration of justice."

Featuring: Ben Brodsky, 2015 NLC Miami Fellow

Organization: Federal Bar Association – South Florida Chapter

Mission: To strengthen the federal legal system, the local legal community, and the administration of justice by serving the interests and the needs of the federal practitioner, both public and private, the federal judiciary and the public they serve.

Role: As of September 2015, President Elect. Currently serving as First Vice President. Previously served as the Second Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors. 

Why: "I choose to spend my time with the organization because the FBA is the leading bar association in South Florida in terms of promoting pro bono work, women lawyers’ advancement, and the swift and impartial administration of justice."

Featuring: Oscar Corral, 2015 NLC Miami Fellow


Organization: SCLAD (Spinal Cord Living-Assistance Development, Inc.)

Mission: To provide affordable housing and social services to people with disabilities.

Role: Volunteer and M.C./communications consultant for their annual luncheon

Why: "SCLAD was started by a quadraplegic and his wife, who is also disabled, Pedro and Angie Rodriguez. They have had an real impact on South Florida, building dozens of units for people with disabilities, finding them jobs, helping them with education and housing. They serve an often-forgotten and needy part of the population. Their compassion and dedication are an inspiration to me."
